Room 801 is returning to Sydney in 2015!
We’ve had a good look at what worked and what didn’t for our first event back in February, and we’ve also taken all of your feedback and the results of the attendee survey on board.
The main changes will concentrate our panels and presentations in a single programming stream over the weekend, with screenings and workshops alternating in a secondary room. This leaves us with more space for our traders to show off their amazing wares and, very importantly, more options for everyone at the con to socialise.
Due to some major stuff that’s been happening in the organisers’ lives, we’re moving the event to Parramatta (in central western Sydney). The venue will be very easy to reach via public transport, parking will be easier and there are heaps of accommodation and food options in the area to suit any budget.
So look forward to an official date and venue announcement very soon – we’ll be opening up expressions of interest for volunteers, traders, presenters and activities this month!
Sorry for the delay, but we’ve finally emailed all of the winners of our huge pre-registration giveaway! Please check your inbox and your junk mail folders, just in case. The final couple of hentai DVDs and raffle prizes will be mailed out this weekend, so those should reach their new owners in the next week too.
Thank you to everyone who pre-registered for your support, and thank you to Madman, AarinFantasy, SuBLime Manga, Siren Visual, Jozef Szekeres, Caleyndar, PenguinFrontier and Aphin123 for making it possible to give out such a great range of prizes.
It’s been a whole month since the con, so it’s about time to relive the memories of Room 801 with some of these great convention reports…
If you’ve put up a report somewhere and would like us to link to it, just comment on this post or email us. If you want to give us feedback on the con anonymously, you can still do that via our attendee survey. We can confirm that we’re doing research into running more events, so your feedback is very important to us!
Three of our raffle prizes have been claimed (yay), but we still have two left! Edit: we’ve added the unclaimed prizes to our pre-registration prize pool instead. See the next post for details.
We’ve emailed a whole bunch of you about our attendee survey but could definitely use more responses, particularly from people who bought a ticket at the door. The responses to our fan survey last year really helped us put the convention together and make sure it was interesting! If you couldn’t join us at the convention, we’ll be running another general survey soon to help us plan for future events – we’ll post about that when it’s up.
As many of you are aware, we didn’t get a chance to draw the raffle at the closing ceremony yesterday because we all got a bit emotional and carried away (in other words, so many feels).
So we’ve just drawn our raffle now – hopefully you’ve all held on to your tickets! Here are the winners:
Each winner will receive a Room 801 tote bag, a sketchbook, two badges from AarinFantasy (by PenguinFrontier and Aphin123) and an eBook code from SuBLime Manga. To claim your prize, please write your name on your ticket and email a legible scan or mobile phone photo of it to us at room801au (at) gmail (dot) com, with the address you want us to send it to. If we don’t hear from any of our winners by next Monday the 3rd of March, we’ll keep drawing winners until the prizes are all given out.
If you missed out this time, we have at least another giveaway to go – we’ll announce those winners later this week!
We can barely believe it, but Room 801: Forbidden Fruit is over!
When we started brainstorming for the con, we wanted to create a really inclusive, educational, inspiring and fun convention that was mature and classy. We feel like we achieved that this weekend, and it sounds like a whole bunch of you feel the same way! What genuinely surprised and delighted us was watching all of you make new friends and discover all sorts of new things.
We’re going to take a break for a few days while we readjust to our normal lives and review how everything went, but if you have any direct feedback please email us or message us on Twitter/Tumblr/Facebook. If you’d rather give us some general or anonymous feedback, we’ll be emailing out surveys to all attendees in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for those.
To get notified of important news including online merchandise sales, our final giveaways and (dare we say it) future events, we highly recommend signing up for our mailing list – we’ll only ever email you about the convention itself, and your details won’t be given to any third parties.
Once again, thank you to absolutely everyone involved… you just helped us make something wonderful happen!
We’ve had an amazing Friday night and Saturday at Room 801, and we’ve received a lot of positive and constructive feedback so far. Everyone seems to be having a great time, which is exactly what we were hoping for! Thank you to our amazing guests and speakers for a day of really engaging, thoughtful and entertaining presentations and discussions… and of course, thank you to our traders, artists and attendees – your passion and enthusiasm is exactly why we love fandom and meeting other fans so much!
If you’re heading in on Sunday, remember that Khursten will be running a fan focus group discussion at 9am in the AV Club room (Wybalena). We have room for about 20 people, so feel free to join in. If you can’t make it because you’re checking out another session or coming to the convention later, just talk to Khursten later in the day or contact her on Twitter and ask her for a questionnaire to fill out instead.
Professional erotica editor Narelle Battersby is still taking bookings for one-one-one pitches and manuscript feedback on your original fiction. She’ll be in the Workshop room from 3:15-4pm so you can either drop by for a chat, or contact her in advance on Twitter or via email at narellebattersby (at) gmail (dot) com.
Just as a reminder, we recommend visiting an ATM on your way to the convention. If you need to drive, Secure Parking on the corner of Elizabeth and Goulburn Streets is the nearest parking lot – their weekend rates are $10 per day, which is great for the CBD. We look forward to seeing all of you on Sunday!
Thank you to everyone who entered our Love is in the Air competition! We have a bonus Hentai Collection DVD thanks to Boots, so we’re actually giving away five prizes. The winners are:
We’ll be contacting the winners in the next fortnight to sort out their prizes! If any of you entered unintentionally, don’t worry, we’ll just work down the list until everyone’s happy.
Some of you have noticed that we’ve listed a University of Wollongong focus group in the schedule on Sunday. This focus group discussion is being carried out as part of a postgraduate research project into fans’ awareness of online and local regulations on censorship and pornography in Australia. This research takes into consideration fandom activities such as fanfiction, fanvids, and fanart, and how said regulations affect their behaviour as fans.
The discussion will be conducted by Khursten Santos in the AV Club (Wybalena) room at 9am, so just turn up if you’d like to take part! Participation is purely voluntary and all participants will remain anonymous.
