Fanart & Fanfiction Competitions

Yes, folks, we have more competitions happening at Room 801! After some requests last year and in recognition of the fact that cosplay isn’t the only way fans can express themselves, we’ve decided to include some more ways for attendees at Australia’s biggest yaoi and yuri convention to win some amazing goodies. In 2015, we’ve not only expanded and formalised our cosplay competition, we’ve also introduced both a fanart and a fanfiction competition. But rather than making either of them a big stressful thing, we want you to have fun with it and be inspired over the weekend, so we’re encouraging you to be inspired by events at Room 801: Mile High Club and get your creativity on!

These are competitions of skill rather than random chance, and judges will take into account multiple criteria. Because your personal art or writing style can be comprised of a variety of elements, works will be considered in their entirety, though having good presentation standards will generally work in your favour.

To enter the fanart or fanfiction competitions, hand in a completed registration form at the merchandise desk with your entry. You can also send us your work via email, though filling out a hardcopy form is also advised so we can make sure we’ve received it. Your entry must include the item or word specified on the day of the competition. Entries will be accepted throughout the weekend, with cutoffs for registration ending at 3pm on Sunday afternoon to allow for judging.

Winners will be announced at the closing event in the Anderson Room on Sunday. Ideally you should be at the event to receive your prize(s), and if you are unreachable following a period of seven (7) days after the announcement, you may forfeit your prize.

Fanart Competition Rules

  1. Art must be submitted to the organisers for judging at either the merchandise desk (drawn or printed out) or via email to room801au@gmail.com
  2. The competition closes at 3pm on Sunday, March 29th.
  3. The winner must be contactable in order to receive their prize, either on Sunday afternoon during the closing ceremony of Room 801, or via email or mobile if they only attended on the Saturday or for part of the Sunday.
  4. This is a competition of skill. Entries will be judged on any or all of the following:
    – canon-relevance
    – likeness of characters
    – stylistic and technical skill
    – presentation (e.g. line quality, composition)
    – sexiness
    – humour
  5. Works will be judged on their own merits: we don’t expect a piece to be canon-relevant if humour is the primary element of the picture, or if a realistic portraiture style has been used to portray anime characters.
  6. Works must feature:
    1. A male or female same-sex pairing being central to the art piece.
    2. The “special term” being employed somewhere within the creation. This is to hopefully inspire new pieces and to give everyone a fair chance at submitting they’ve written in a short space of time rather than pre-drawn pieces.
    3. Characters from any fannish franchise. No original characters, please.
  7. Trigger warnings should potentially triggering material (abuse, trauma, mental health issues, etc) be featured in the story.
  8. The works CAN feature (though it is not an inherent requirement that they do feature any or all of these features):
    1. an add-on to canon
    2. sex scenes
    3. a lack of sex scenes
    4. AU characters—aged up, in a different universe, etc.
  9. Works MAY NOT feature:
    1. sexual situations involving characters under the age of 16
    2. a focus on heterosexual pairings
    3. bestiality
  10. Judges’ decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  11. Room 801/Objectionable Events may use an image of your winning entry online, with your permission.
  12. Volunteers, staff, and organisers are ineligible to enter the cosplay contest, in order to keep it fair for paying attendees.

Fanfiction Competition Rules

  1. Drabbles must be no more than 200 words in length.
  2. Drabbles must be submitted to the organisers for judging at either the merchandise desk (handwritten or printed) or via email to room801au@gmail.com
  3. The competition closes at 3pm on Sunday, March 29th.
  4. The winner must be contactable in order to receive their prize, either on Sunday afternoon during the closing ceremony of Room 801, or via email or mobile if they only attended on the Saturday or for part of the Sunday.
  5. This is a competition of skill. Entries will be judged on any or all of the following:
    – canon-relevance
    – characterisation
    – skill
    – presentation (ie. grammatically correct, spellcheck used, paragraphing)
    – sexiness
    – humour
  6. Works will be judged on their own merits: we don’t expect a piece to be canon-relevant if humour is the primary element of the fic and a ridiculously OOC alternate universe is what the writer has chosen to write about.
  7. Works must feature:
    1. A male or female same-sex pairing being central to the story.
    2. The “special term” being employed somewhere within the creation. This is to hopefully inspire new pieces and to give everyone a fair chance at submitting they’ve written in a short space of time rather than pre-written pieces.
    3. Characters from any fannish franchise. No original characters, please.
  8. Trigger warnings should potentially triggering material (abuse, trauma, mental health issues, etc) be featured in the story.
  9. The works CAN feature (though it is not an inherent requirement that they do feature any or all of these features):

  13. Volunteers, staff, and organisers are ineligible to enter the cosplay contest, in order to keep it fair for paying attendees.
